System Overview
Mobile Satellite communications are one of life's
necessities for a broad range of market segments when
working or travelling in remote areas. Historically a small
number of satellite providers have provided global, and in
some instances regional network coverage, but, at a very
high air time cost, using mobile or small portable
terminals.
In contrast to the Mobile Satellite
providers, fixed satellite services are being provided at a
fraction of the operational cost of these mobile services.
Typically referred to as VSATs, which is an acronym for Very
Small Aperture Terminals, VSATs are commonly used in fixed
locations where the antenna is mounted on a platform which
is bolted to a post with a concrete footing. The antenna
sizes are typically greater than 1.8m and provide high speed
data services and lower costs compared to mobile satellite
services. Using bulky and expensive stabilized antenna
platforms these VSATs can also be mounted on vessels and
vehicles, so as to provide mobile C band communications.
Now there is another option which will
provide customers with lower cost, mobile, high quality
voice and high speed data. Designed to operate with existing
satellites and based almost entirely on Internet Protocol
technology the service is both cost effective and provides a
much higher performance than comparable services.
