THISS Technologies Wins R&D Award For 60cm Marine VSAT System

Singapore - 13th April 2011 – At this year’s Singapore International Maritime Awards THISS Technologies Pte Ltd was the recipient of the Outstanding Maritime R&D and Technology Award 2011.

THISS was identified as the outstanding candidate by the independent judging panel chaired by the Chairman of the MPA, Mr Lucien Wong. The award was one of seven categories presented by Guest-of-Honour, Mr Raymond Lim, Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs in a ceremony hosted by the MPA as part of the activities of the Singapore Maritime Week.

The 60cm C-Band Marine satellite Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) system, developed by THISS in conjunction with industry partners, was the culmination of more than 3 years of R&D effort and testing. The satellite terminal is the smallest C-Band VSAT of it’s kind in the market.

“We are very pleased to have been recognised in this way, especially in such a competitive field”, said THISS COO Mr. Nicholas Cirillo, “Conducting R&D has been a challenging endeavour in the context of the financial climate of the past couple of years.”

“The global recession, has forced the price competitive merchant-shipping sector to look carefully and deeply into the rationalization of operating expenses in order to remain competitive. This, together with the increasing demand on crew welfare for attracting and retaining ship crew, have opened up a window of opportunity for emerging technology and service providers in the satellite communications industry to apply modern, cost-effective solutions.”

“THISS, with its small form factor and low cost maritime satellite terminal is set to play a significant role in the reshaping of this industry.”

Schlumberger, one of the largest Oil and Gas services companies in the world, did in 2010 launch the Sea Connect service, based on the THISS 60cm Marine VSAT.

THISS Technologies is a Singaporean company, founded in 2003, conducting R&D in the field of satellite communications technology. Their technology allows the use of novel small-sized satellite antennas and terminals, whilst still meeting satellite co-ordination regulations. The use of smaller satellite terminals at a given frequency band allows: lower terminal cost; new market opportunities for smaller vessels and extremely remote sites as well as lower shipping and installation costs.
