THISS’s early days evolved from a company called Marine-Watch Ltd, incorporated in August 2000 in Australia to develop and market new products and services to the Australian marine industry for logistics, fleet and asset management. Marine-Watch was the authorised maritime distributor for Startrack Communications Ltd, satellite communication network and also designed and developed proprietary services using the Optus Mobilesat system, Optus satellite and other satellite networks.
During the successful deployment of the Startrack service, the Directors of Marine-Watch identified that the high L band satellite communication costs were a significant deterrent to distributors and customers in the take up of service. Therefore, the Directors started identifying alternative satellite solutions and development of various antennae which focused on finding a global satellite design that allowed for a massive reduction in air time tariffs.
This led to a C band satellite system design and patent application in November 2001 jointly with TerraVision and later to a further patent application in June 2002 for its helical antenna technology following a series of prototype antenna developments and satellite field trials. In March 2003, THISS Technologies was incorporated in Singapore after a "seed" funding arrangement with Agilis Communication Technologies, a subsidiary of Singapore Technologies, at the end of June 2003. All Marine Watch’s assets were transferred into THISS Technologies at this point. Agilis and THISS have formed an alliance for developing Global Mobile Satellite communications using existing C Band satellites. Subsequently THISS has been awarded additional development grants from EDB and investments from MPA, as well as contract awards totaling US$1 million and additional equity circa US$0.5million. In June 2006, another strategic investor – Brunswick New Technologies invested over US 2m into the company.
